Christmas is Just Around the Corner!

There are only 31 days left until Christmas!  It’s true, take a look at the calendar! It’s coming fast this year.

This year I’m hosting Christmas dinner at my house (no, you’re not invited, sorry…). I’m going to need to do an extra huge bird because we have a large family. I enjoy hosting dinners at our place and really love going the extra mile and creating everything from scratch. A friend of mine once told me that she uses canned gravy and boxed stuffing for Christmas dinner. Needless to say, I was horrified! LOL! That’s okay for every other day of the year, but not for Christmas! What would Santa think? Would that be enough to get you onto the Naughty List, or would he have forgiven you by the following year? I’m not willing to take that chance.

Speaking of going the extra mile, this year I created a special advent calendar for my kids. They don’t know about it yet, so please don’t mention it in their presence if you know me in real life. I’m going to give it to them as a gift on December 1st. It’s large enough to hold 3 mini chocolates in each drawer. They are going to be super excited about this.

I used Echo Park’s Season’s Greetings for the majority of the project. I love this paper line. I consider it to be the best Christmas paper line this year. I also used a little bit of Graphic 45 paper that I had left over from their Christmas Past line from last year.  Some of the other products that I used are baker’s twine from The Twinery, a Santa Claus ornament from Hallmark Cards, a mini Christmas tree from Michael’s and several digital die cut files from Silhouette America.  I currently have the Silhouette SD and I’m looking forward to upgrading to The Cameo soon!

Advent Calendar

I covered the entire Kaiser Craft advent calendar in Echo Park and Graphic 45 paper, along with red and gold paint. The gold paint is really high quality, which was important to get that really shiny gold look. It’s an acrylic paint by Golden.

Advent Calendar 2

I embellished the chipboard wreath by adding a baker’s twine and ribbon bow to it, and some Stickles. Everyone needs Stickles! The other chipboard items were embellished by layering them and by adding crystals.

Advent Calendar 7

A closeup of the presents. I individually wrapped tiny piece of chipboard and tied them up with baker’s twine and twine. The tiny gift bag was made using a Silhouette gift bag cut file, baker’s twine from The Twinery and some tissue paper.

Advent Calendar 4

The fireplace and the stockings are also digital cut files from Silhouette. The stockings are a design from Echo Park, available in the Silhouette America store. I used The Twinery’s baker’s twine to hang the stockings from the fireplace and tiny brads to keep them in place. The mantle clock is a chipboard piece from Echo Park — i just drew the hands on.

Graphic 45, Once Upon a Springtime layout

Graphic 45, Once Upon a Springtime layout

I absolutely adore Graphic 45′s Once Upon a Springtime paper. It was love at first sight! I had to have it even though I didn’t know what I was going to do with it! I bought it a few months ago and finally came across the right pictures for the layout. I got some great shots of my two girls with Tinkerbell and her fairy friends at Pixie Hollow in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. The girls enjoyed visiting with the fairies a lot. The cast members told us that we were going to shrink down to fairy size in order to be the same size as the fairies when we entered Pixie Hollow. Alison was worried that it might hurt, but the cast members assured us that we wouldn’t feel a thing. I didn’t feel anything – it was completely painless! Alison believed their story, and later told me that she felt a slight tingling sensation! ;-)

Unfortunately, the pictures were a little too vibrant for the paper. Tinkerbell’s outfit is almost a fluorescent green and the paper has more of a kelly green in it. I toned the pictures down by desaturating them in Photoshop. You can do this by following these easy steps:

  1. Open the file/picture in Photoshop
  2. Next go to the Layer menu and select Layer – Duplicate layer…
  3. Click on your duplicated layer, and press Shift + Ctrl + U to completely desaturate the image (ie. create a black and white image), or click on Image -Adjustments – Desaturate and play with the saturation scale to desaturate the image to your desired result.
  4. Save the edited image by going to the File menu and selecting Save as… or press Shift + Ctrl + S. I recommend saving the image under a new file name so that you don’t overwrite the original image.

Once I had my photos edited and printed, I started to think about my page layout. Like I’ve said before, some papers ‘tell’ how they should be used in a scrapbook layout, and this one certainly does that. I individually cut out all of my fairies and sprayed all of my paper with Sheer Shimmer Spritz in Sparkle by Tsukineko. This mist is a bit more subtle than some others, adding sparkle without actually influencing the colour of the paper. I added 3D pop dots behind my main fairies in order to add dimension to the page and to make the fairies even more of a focal point. I also created a lot of layering to add interest to the whole project.

Materials used:
